Bobi, the world’s oldest dog ever, has died at the age of 31.

According to to Guinness World Records, Bobi died on Oct. 21 at his home in Portugal where he lived with the Costa family.

Dr. Karen Becker, a veterinarian who met Bobi on several occasions, announced the news of his passing on her Instagram page.

A post shared by Dr. Karen Becker (@drkarenbecker)

“Is there ever enough time? I think not. Last night, this sweet boy earned his wings,” she wrote in the caption of a tribute photo of the famous pup.

According to People, Bobi was a purebred Rafeiro do Alentejo breed with a life expectancy of 12-14 years. According to Guinness, Bobi was born May 11, 1992.

Becker shared the secret to Bobi’s longevity from his owner Leonel Costa.

She continued:

“Despite outliving every dog in history, his 11,478 days on earth would never be enough for those who loved him. When we asked Leonel what his recipe was for Bobi’s exceptionally long life, his response was swift: ‘Good nutrition, constant contact with nature, freedom to discover his environment, consistent veterinary care, and love. Bobi knows he’s deeply loved.’”

Becker concluded, “Godspeed, Bobi…you’ve taught the world all you were meant (sic) to teach.”

Back in May, Costa spoke to Guinness World Records in celebration of Bobi turning 31. Costa was planning a “very traditional” Portuguese party for Bobi with over 100 people in attendance.

Speaking about Bobi’s fame, Costa said, “We’ve had a lot of journalists and people come from all over the world to take a picture with Bobi.”

“Bobi is special because looking at him is like remembering the people who were part of our family and unfortunately are no longer here, like my father, my brother, or my grandparents who have already left this world,” Costa said.

He concluded, “Bobi represents those generations.”

With Bobi’s passing, a 23-year-old chihuahua mix from Ohio named Spike is now hold’s the title as world’s oldest living dog, USA Today reported.
