The White House is firing back after House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) announced the launch of a formal impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden.

In a post of X, formerly known as Twitter, White House spokesman for oversight and investigations Ian Sams wrote, “House Republicans have been investigating the President for 9 months, and they’ve turned up no evidence of wrongdoing. His own GOP members have said so.”

“[McCarthy] vowed to hold a vote to open impeachment, now he flip flopped because he doesn’t have support,” he continued, adding, “Extreme politics at its worst.”

Sams’ tweet comes after McCarthy announced he was directing House committees to open an impeachment inquiry into Biden.

Speaking to reporters, McCarthy noted allegations of corruption made against the Biden family, which he argued “warrant further investigation by the House of Representatives.”

Punchbowl News reported on Tuesday morning it was expected the House speaker would tell Republicans an impeachment inquiry is the “next logical step” in their Biden investigation.

After that report, Sams asked on X, “Will anyone ask Speaker McCarthy *why* an impeachment inquiry is the ‘next logical step?” The House GOP investigations have turned up no evidence of wrongdoing by POTUS. In fact, their own witnesses have testified to that, and their own documents have showed no link to POTUS.”

“McCarthy is being told by Marjorie Taylor Greene to do impeachment, or else she’ll shut down the government. Opening impeachment despite zero evidence of wrongdoing by POTUS is simply red meat for the extreme rightwing so they can keep baselessly attacking him. They admit it,” he added.

In anticipation of the Republicans’ move, the White House created a war room featuring two dozen lawyers, legislative aides, and communications staffers to respond to an impeachment inquiry.

A White House staffer told NBC News that Republicans have “no evidence whatsoever” for their allegations against Biden.
