White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre angered Twitter users after she made a claim about Republicans and gas prices.

During a Monday press briefing, Jean-Pierre said, “House Republicans are using their narrow majority to force the American people to pay higher gas prices, just as big oil companies are amassing record profits.”

She continued, “What’s even more alarming is that this is not the only attempt by House Republicans majority to raise costs on middle class families. House Republicans are also pushing a tax increase on middle class families and inflation, worsening tax cuts for the rich.”

President Joe Biden also sparked backlash Monday after taking to Twitter to tout a decline in gas prices.

“Gas prices are down around $1.60 a gallon from their peak this summer – and my Administration will keep working to lower costs for American families,” Biden tweeted.

GasBuddy projections published last month showed gas prices could return to $4 or higher as soon as May, as IJR reported.

“2023 is not going to be a cakewalk for motorists. It could be expensive,” Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, explained to CNN at the time.

He added, “The national average could breach $4 a gallon as early as May – and that’s something that could last through much of the summer driving season.”
