Daily Caller News Foundation

Democratic Michigan State Sen. Mallory McMorrow announced Wednesday that she is running for Michigan’s open Senate seat in 2026.

McMorrow stated in an announcement video that Michigan needs new leaders, adding that the “same old crap out of Washington” would not fix the country’s current “fear and danger.”

“We need new leaders,” McMorrow said in her announcement video. “Because the same people in D.C. who got us into this mess are not going to be the ones to get us out of it … I’m running for U.S. Senate because we don’t have a minute to wait.”

The state senator previously called for Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer to step down from his position after the party leader faced massive intraparty backlash over his decision to vote to advance a GOP spending bill backed by President Donald Trump. In March, Democratic Maryland Rep. Glenn Ivey also called for Schumer to resign, along with other left-wing youth activist organizations.

McMorrow is viewed as a rising star of the Democratic Party, according to Politico. Notably, she has promoted various left-wing initiatives during her time in office, including abortion and gun control.

McMorrow’s campaign referred the Daily Caller News Foundation to a press release announcing her candidacy when reached for comment.

The race to succeed retiring Michigan Sen. Gary Peters is anticipated to be one of the most competitive races in the 2026 election cycle, with McMorrow being the first to announce a bid for the seat.

Other potential Democratic contenders include Democratic Michigan Reps. Haley Stevens and Kristen McDonald Rivet, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel and progressive Abdul El-Sayed.

Former Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg announced on March 13 that he would not make a bid for Michigan’s open Senate seat, fueling speculation that he is considering making a bid for the White House in 2028.

The Democratic Party has notably been grappling with plummeting approval ratings and struggling to effectively communicate with voters after Trump won the November 2024 presidential election and Republicans notched control of both chambers of Congress.
