“The View” audience expressed their displeasure when a Republican governor swore off banning a certain type of firearm.

New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu (R) appeared on the show Thursday and was confronted about his stance on gun control.

“Why are you holding onto this one gun?” Whoopi Goldberg asked.

When Sununu asked what gun she was referring to, Joy Behar chimed in, “The AR-15. The automatic rifle that killed a bunch of children who were just going to school.”

The governor responded, “If you say, ‘Well, we’re just going to ban…’ Again if it was that easy, the Democrats would have done it. They didn’t do it because they know that’s not what the issue is.”

However, Behar pressed, “What are you going to do?”

“I’m not going to ban any guns,” Sununu responded. He added, “I’m going to provide access to mental health, we’re going to get at the core of the issue.”

The audience began to boo in response.

However, Goldberg told to the audience, “Stop… No! No, no, no. No, no. No! No booing.”

“No Republican will ever come back here if you’re going to boo,” Behar said.

Goldberg added, “We need to talk to people to find out what they’re thinking and are they thinking in the right way? He’s not going to be perfect — none of them are. But at least give people the opportunity to say what’s going on.”

At a separate point, Sununu pushed back on the idea of more gun control as he said, “If the argument is: if we just have more gun bans and more gun laws, Chicago would be the safest place in the country.”

He went on to claim New Hampshire is the “safest state in the country,” and noted it does not have strict gun control laws.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in 2021, there were 123 gun deaths in the state — ranking it the fourth state with the fewest number of gun deaths.
