CNN reported police have taken University of Virginia student and ex-UVA football player Christopher Darnell Jones Jr. into custody after he was accused of fatally shooting three current football players and wounding two other individuals.
The suspect is facing three charges of second-degree murder and three counts of using a handgun in the commission of a felony, as the outlet explained.
The victims of the shooting were identified as Devin Chandler, Lavel Davis Jr. and D’Sean Perry.
“This is a sad, shocking and tragic day for our UVA community,” university President Jim Ryan said.
He added, “Let me say how deeply sorry I am for the victims and for their family and friends.”
It was reported that the shooting took place close to a parking garage on campus on a bus of students as it returned from another trip.
Lawmakers took to Twitter to share their reactions to the news.

Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.) wrote, “I’m thankful for the hard work of local law enforcement in bringing the suspect of the shooting at UVa into custody. My thoughts are still with the families of the victims and the entire Charlottesville community. We must continue working to address the epidemic of gun violence.”

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre issued a statement, saying, “The President and First Lady are mourning with the University of Virginia community after yet another deadly shooting in America has taken the lives of three young people. Our deepest condolences are with the countless families, friends, and neighbors grieving for those killed as well as those injured in this senseless shooting.”
