A cameraman abandoned his post to help a family struggling through a hurricane in Florida.

Cameraman for the Australian morning show “Sunrise” Glen Ellis was recording a reporter when he noticed people struggling to carry their belongings through the water.

He then set the camera down and headed toward them to help.

When asked if everything is OK, 7NEWS US correspondent Tim Lester replied, “We’re just helping some people through the water here. That is our camera operator, Glen Ellis, out there. I think you can see he is trying to help people who are moving away from their homes.”

He added, “We’ve spoken to a couple of them and they tell us that already that their houses have been lost in the water.”

Lester continued, “They have flooded right through and they have had to abandon them. They just have no other way of doing it. But they are trying to get out and obviously what we have here, is a relatively high ground, so we are lucky enough to be able to talk to you.”

During Lester’s report, Ellis can be seen wading in and out of the water to help people with their belongings.

CNN reported on Thursday rescuers were out pulling “people from roofs, flooded homes and submerged vehicles” across the state as Tropical Storm Ian continues to deliver high winds and rains.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) said, as of 6 a.m. Thursday morning, 2.2 million utility customers are without power throughout the state.

Most of them are located in southwest Florida.

“Lee and Charlotte (counties) are basically off the grid at this point,” DeSantis said.

He added, “That’s going to be more than just connecting a power line back to a pole.”

Additionally, the governor reported severe structural damage to the Sanibel Causeway and Pine Island Bridge.

“Those two are not passable and they are going to require structural rebuilds,” he explained.
