The long-running cartoon “Scooby-Doo” has depicted one of its main characters as being lesbian in its new movie, “Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo!”
Velma, one of the five primary characters and team member of Mystery Inc., has gone viral for a tweet showing a clip of her being struck speechless by one of the new female characters, a costume designer named Coco Diablo, according to Variety.
The glasses-wearing sleuth can be seen with her cheeks turning pink and lenses fogging as she says, “Jinkies,” upon meeting Diablo.

This was not Velma’s only reaction to the character, however. In another clip, Diablo seems to respond to Velma, saying, “The cute one’s right,” and grabbing Velma’s shoulder. Yet another clip from the show allows viewers to see Velma exclaims to Daphne, “OK, who am I kidding? I’m crushing big-time, Daphne. What do I do? What do I say?”
Variety called it an “open secret” that Velma was gay with live-action “Scooby-Doo” film writer James Gun reportedly confirming the character’s sexuality was part of an earlier film, but that portion of the script never made it into the final film.
Gunn reportedly “tried” to make Velma homosexual in the movies, saying in a tweet, “In 2001 Velma was explicitly gay in my initial script. But the studio just kept watering it down & watering it down, becoming ambiguous (the version shot), then nothing (the released version) & finally having a boyfriend (the sequel).”
Supervising producer on the “Mystery Incorporated” series, Tony Cervone, was also clear about his intentions for Velma previously saying in an Instagram post, “I’ve said this before, but Velma in ‘Mystery Incorporated’ is not bi. She’s gay. We always planned on Velma acting a little off and out of character when she was dating Shaggy because that relationship was wrong for her and she had unspoken difficulty with the why,” according to Variety.
The producer went on to say, “There are hints about the why in that episode with the mermaid, and if you follow the entire Marcie arc it seems as clear as we could make it 10 years ago. I don’t think Marcie and Velma had time to act on their feelings during the main timeline, but post reset, they are a couple. You can not like it, but this was our intention.”
