A Vietnamese student who was looking forward to going to university near the beaches was in for a shock when she arrived.

Valerie Do explained in a TikTok video that she “did not realize” she had been applying to Miami University in Ohio instead of in Florida, adding that she loves her school and that it has provided her with the “true American college experience.”

“I thought it was Miami, Florida and did not realize,” Valerie Do admitted in a TikTok video.

“There are no beaches here it’s just cornfield and in the middle of nowhere,” Do added in her video.

In a follow-up video, Do revealed that she “didn’t realize it was in Ohio” until she received her acceptance letter in the mail.

“I basically went through the whole application process without knowing it’s in Ohio,” Do said. “I don’t even know how they accepted me, please do not ask.”

Upon receiving her acceptance letter, Do realized that the university was in Ohio. For various reasons, ranging from financial aid, a scholarship she had received, and the environment on campus, Do ended up going to the university in Ohio.

“I love my school and I love it here,” Do explained in another TikTok video. “Miami has a true American college experience that I was looking for, just like in the movie. Cause I grew up watching movies like “Legally Blonde,” “Mean Girls,” “Bring It On,” Animal House,” stuff like that. And I hope to experience stuff like that and Miami has the perfect stuff for me.”

The university, based out of Oxford, Ohio, has about 19,000 undergraduate students, according to the website.

More than 1,000 international students from almost 100 countries are reported to be attending Miami University.

“The people here are really friendly and I feel like I don’t have to change myself to be able to fit in,” Do added. “This aspect is something really important for international students because when we first came here we had this huge language and culture barrier and Miami has great resources for international students.”
