Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (D-Calif.) take on the indictment of former President Donald Trump did not sit well with Twitter users.

Commenting on Thursday’s indictment on Twitter, Pelosi wrote, “The Grand Jury has acted upon the facts and the law. No one is above the law, and everyone has the right to a trial to prove innocence.”

She added, “Hopefully, the former President will peacefully respect the system, which grants him that right.”

The Grand Jury has acted upon the facts and the law.

No one is above the law, and everyone has the right to a trial to prove innocence.

Hopefully, the former President will peacefully respect the system, which grants him that right.

Rudy Giuliani, Trump’s former personal lawyer, replied, “Wrong. So obviously wrong. Most Middle Schoolers know this—at least they used to, when civics and the Constitution was respected in schools.”

He added, “You’re innocent until proven guilty.”

You're innocent until proven guilty. https://t.co/edaKuOlxbe

Author Alex Berenson responded, “Should we be worried the former Speaker of the House has no idea how the law works? Innocent until proven guilty, it’s a thing.”

He continued, “Or just happy she is tweeting for herself despite her advanced age? (No staffer would have made this mistake…)”

Podcaster Eric Matheny suggested, “We’ve devolved so much into third world nation status it’s reasonable to conclude that the idea of presumption of innocence would be lost upon a government parasite like Pelosi.”

Conservative commentator Dan Bongino added, “When the embarrassing former Speaker flunks Constitution 101. What a tool.”

Check out more responses below:

In the United States we don't "prove innocence."
We are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
How do you not know this? https://t.co/pFZyJ2DW3E

Prove your innocence, says the world's best insider trader. That's not how it works, Nancy; we assume one's innocence and prove their guilt. https://t.co/NhY3K9Pao6

Wow we are officially living in a 3rd world country https://t.co/pYRG112i8h

Nancy Pelosi is dead wrong here. Does she really have no clue that the burden is not on a defendant to prove their innocence at trial? https://t.co/h2i25rMeyM

— Lee Zeldin (@leezeldin) March 31, 2023

They're are no media journalists correcting her on this or quote tweeting this. They agree with her https://t.co/YHLQp4bgS4

The real question is WILL YOU when your time comes Nancy.

Because it’s coming.

SOON! https://t.co/bGVXzhLoJg

The last time Americans had to "prove their innocence," we were governed by the British. https://t.co/srCeIaijRy

There was context added to Pelosi’s tweet, saying, “Ms. Pelosi mistakenly says that Trump can prove his innocence at trial. Law in the US assumes the innocence of a defendant and the prosecution must prove guilt for a conviction.”

A Manhattan grand jury voted to indict Trump for his role in paying hush money to Stormy Daniels, IJR reported.

The former president later issued a statement on Truth Social, saying the indictment is “Political Persecution and Election Interference at the highest level in history.”
