Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wisc.) has not officially said whether he is planning to run for reelection in 2022.

However, former President Donald Trump is throwing his weight behind Johnson.

In a statement on Thursday, Trump said, “Even though he has not yet announced that he is running, and I certainly hope he does, I am giving my Complete and Total Endorsement to Senator Ron Johnson of Wisconsin.”

“He is brave, he is bold, he loves our Country, our Military, and our Vets.  He will protect our Second Amendment, and everything else we stand for.  It is the kind of courage we need in the U.S. Senate,” he continued.

He added, “Run, Ron, Run!”

Johnson, 65, was elected to the Senate in 2010 and pledged to serve two terms. As of Thursday morning, he had not announced whether he plans to run for reelection in 2022.

Speaking to reporters in March, he said, “That pledge is on my mind, it was my preference then, I would say it’s probably my preference now.”

While he said he was “happy to go home,” he said the pledge was “based on the assumption we wouldn’t have Democrats in total control of government, and we’re seeing what I would consider the devastating and harmful effects of Democrats’ total control just ramming things through.”

Additionally, Johnson signaled that he might not be making a decision too soon before 2022.

“I truthfully have not decided, and I don’t think I have to decide anytime soon, quite honestly,” he told Wisconsin radio station WTMJ. “I think I’ll save everybody a lot of money by holding tight and making a decision when I’m ready to.”

Johnson recently received backlash after he claimed he did not feel threatened by the pro-Trump mob that stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, but that he might have if it were Black Lives Matter protesters that stormed the building.
