Former President Donald Trump is using rising gas prices to cudgel President Joe Biden as millions of Americans are expected to travel over Memorial Day weekend.
In a statement on his website on Thurdsay, Trump wrote, “With Memorial Day Weekend coming up, tomorrow people start driving in the biggest automobile days of the year. I’m sorry to say the gasoline prices that you will be confronted with are far higher than they were just a short number of months ago where we had gasoline under $2 a gallon.”
“Remember as you’re watching the meter tick, and your dollars pile up, how great of a job Donald Trump did as President. Soon Russia and the Middle East will be making a fortune on oil, and you will be saying how good it was to have me as your President,” he continued.
Finally, he added, “Wasn’t it great to be energy independent, but we are energy independent no more. Shame, shame, shame. Other than that, have a great Memorial Day Weekend!”

Demand for gas has risen 43% since the same time last year. In March 2021, gas prices had risen roughly 30% from the prior year.
As of the Thursday, the national average for gas stood at $3.04 per gallon, up from $1.96 a year ago.
Prices also increased earlier this month after a cyberattack led Colonial Pipeline to shut down its operations. The incident led to panic buying and gas shortages in several states.
