Former President Donald Trump is reveling in the news one of his political rivals will not be seeking re-election in 2024.

On Wednesday, Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) announced he would not run for another six years in the Senate, but vowed to serve out his current term.

And in a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote, “FANTASTIC NEWS FOR AMERICA,THE GREAT STATE OF UTAH, [and] FOR THE REPUBLICAN PARTY.”

“MITT ROMNEY, SOMETIMES REFERRED TO AS PIERRE DELECTO, WILL NOT BE SEEKING A SECOND TERM IN THE U.S. SENATE, WHERE HE DID NOT SERVE WITH DISTINCTION,” he continued.

Finally, he added, “A BIG PRIMARY FIGHT AGAINST HIM WAS IN THE OFFING, BUT NOW THAT WILL NOT BE NECESSARY. CONGRATS TO ALL. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”

In a video announcing his decision, Romney said, “I’ve spent my last 25 years in public service of one kind or another. At the end of another term, I’d be in my mid-80s,” Romney said.

He added, “Frankly, it’s time for a new generation of leaders. They’re the ones that need to make the decisions that will shape the world they will be living in.”

Romney also accused President Joe Biden and Trump of failing to lead their parties to address major issues facing the country.

“Political motivations too often impede the solutions that these challenges demand. The next generation of leaders must take America to the next stage of global leadership. While I’m not running for re-election, I’m not retiring from the fight. I’ll be your United States senator to January of 2025,” he added.

Romney has drawn the ire of conservatives over his criticism of Trump and his votes in favor of impeachment.

In 2020, he became the first senator in history to vote to remove a president of his own party.
