President Donald Trump is going after Senate Majority Whip John Thune (R-S.D.) for suggesting his efforts to challenge the Electoral College vote would fail.

“Republicans in the Senate so quickly forget. Right now they would be down 8 seats without my backing them in the last Election. RINO John Thune, ‘Mitch’s boy’, should just let it play out,” Trump wrote on Twitter on Tuesday night.

He added, “South Dakota doesn’t like weakness. He will be primaried in 2022, political career over!!!”

Thune told reporters attempts made by Trump and other Republicans to overturn the election are “not going anywhere.”

He continued, “I mean, in the Senate it would go down like a shot dog. And I just don’t think it makes a lot of sense to put everybody through this when you know what the ultimate outcome is going to be.”

The Electoral College affirmed President-elect Joe Biden won the election on Dec. 14, as IJR previously reported.

Trump has refused to concede and continues to push unsubstantiated allegations of widespread voter fraud.

He took to Twitter on Friday to tell Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and other Republicans to “get tougher,” as IJR previously reported.

Trump wrote, “[Mitch McConnell] and Republican Senators have to get tougher, or you won’t have a Republican Party anymore. We won the Presidential Election, by a lot. FIGHT FOR IT. Don’t let them take it away.”

The president’s campaign announced Sunday it filed a petition asking the Supreme Court to reverse election results in Pennsylvania.

“The Campaign’s petition seeks to reverse three decisions which eviscerated the Pennsylvania Legislature’s protections against mail ballot fraud,” Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani said in a statement.

Attorney General William Barr told reporters on Monday he will not appoint a special counsel to investigate the election claims.

“If I thought a special counsel at this stage was the right tool and was appropriate, I would name one. But I haven’t and I’m not going to,” Barr said.
