President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris could be in for a tough 2024 campaign season if they face off against the 45th president, according to a new poll.

A Harvard CAPS-Harris Poll released to The Hill on Monday found the president and vice president trailing former President Donald Trump in hypothetical matchups.

According to the poll, if the 2024 election were held today, 47% of respondents would vote for Trump, while 41% would vote for Biden. Another 12% of respondents said they were undecided.

Meanwhile, 49% said they would vote for Trump, while 38% said they would vote for Harris.

Last week, Biden told reporters he would be “very fortunate” if he ran against Trump in 2024, as IJR reported.

Mark Penn, the co-director of the Harvard CAPS-Harris Poll survey, said, “I would not give a lot of weight to trial heats right now other than they reflect the weakness of Biden and the administration right now.”

He added, “That Trump beats them both by a wide margin suggests most Republican nominees once known fully by the public would beat them unless they are able to pivot out of the current nadir in their numbers.”

The poll also found that 59% of Republicans would prefer that Trump wins the nomination. Former Vice President Mike Pence and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) were statistically tied for second place at 11% and 10%, respectively.

If Trump does not run, DeSantis received 28% support while Pence received 24%, and Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) received 10%.

The poll also examined a scenario where neither Biden nor Trump runs in 2024, and Harris is the Democratic presidential nominee.

It found Harris received 40% of the vote while DeSantis received 38%.

The poll surveyed 1,990 registered voters and was conducted March 23-24.
