President Donald Trump did not explicitly condemn white supremacists or militia groups during the first presidential debate.

During the debate on Tuesday night, Trump was asked if he would specifically condemn white supremacists and call for far-right groups and militias to “stand down.”

“Sure,” Trump said, adding, “I would say almost everything I see is from the left-wing. Not from the right-wing. I’m willing to do anything, I want to see peace.”

Moderator Chris Wallace and Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden interjected to call on Trump to condemn white supremacists and militia groups.

When the president asked for a specific group, Wallace said white supremacists, and Biden said the right-wing Proud Boys.

“Proud Boys, stand back and stand by. But I’ll tell you what, somebody’s got to do something about Antifa and the left. Because this is not a right-wing problem,” Trump said.

Proud Boys is a group seen as a far-right organization that has been involved in clashes with left-wing demonstrators.

Biden responded by noting that FBI Director Christopher Wray has raised concerns about white supremacists, but called Antifa an “idea.”
