Republicans Nominate New Candidate to Be Next House Speaker

WASHINGTON, DC - OCTOBER 23: U.S. House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-MN) speaks to reporters as he leaves a House Republican candidates forum where congressmen who are running for Speaker of the House presented their platforms in the Longworth House Office Building on Capitol Hill on October 23, 2023 in Washington, DC. Members of the GOP conference will hear from the now eight candidates who hope to succeed former Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), who was ousted on October 4 in a move led by a small group of conservative members of his own party. Republicans nominated House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-Minn.) to be the next Speaker of the House on Tuesday.

Emmer’s nomination came as Republicans voted by secret ballot for about three hours. Voting consisted of five rounds in which GOP members picked a candidate, with the member with the lowest numbers being eliminated.

The nomination of Emmer makes him the third Republican lawmaker to seek the position of Speaker of the House since eight Republicans joined with Democrats to remove Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) from his position.

Austin Scott (R-Ga.) was removed after the third round of voting. Rep. Kevin Hern (R-Okla.) was removed after the fourth round of voting, while Rep. Bryon Donalds (R-Fla.) dropped out.

The fifth round of voting consisted of Emmer and Rep. Mike Johnson (R-La.).

House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan lost a third round of voting on Friday after he received 194 votes and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) received 210 votes. Both failed to receive the necessary 217 votes.
