Democratic Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz admitted Sunday during an appearance on CNN that Democrats may have made a mistake for failing to acknowledge that former President Joe Biden was not up to the task of running for reelection in 2024.

On CNN’s “State of the Union,” Walz said the Democratic Party needs to learn from their “lessons” in the 2024 election cycle. The former vice presidential candidate’s comments come amid his party struggling to find its footing after President Donald Trump took control of the White House in November 2024.

“Don’t you think your party needs to acknowledge that President Biden was not up for the job of running for re-election, and that this was a major mistake?” “State of the Union” host Jake Tapper asked Walz. “You all went along with the idea that he was up for it and he wasn’t, and everybody saw it. And the country rejected it.”

“History will tell us to go back on that. That very well could be the case, Jake,” Walz said. “What I’m concerned about is learning from those lessons. I would hope we would never do it again, make a mistake, make sure we go through and get someone. But I don’t know where it helps us going forward.”

The Democratic governor also said during the interview that the Democratic Party allowed the Republican Party to define their policies on issues such as illegal immigration, “food insecurity” and income gaps between races.

Biden faced major criticism over his performance in a presidential debate against President Donald Trump, which CNN hosted in June 2024. The then-president dropped out of the race for the White House in July 2024 after a growing number of members of his own party publicly called for him to step aside.

The Democratic Party is currently grappling with record-low approval ratings. A March 16 CNN poll conducted by SSRS found that the party’s favorability rating dropped to 29%, a new record low.

Walz’s office did not respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.
