Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) is taking aim at President Joe Biden over his promise to nominate a Black woman to the Supreme Court.

During an episode of the podcast “Verdict” with co-host Michael Knowles, Cruz called the pledge “offensive.”

He explained, “Black women are, what, 6% of the U.S. population? He’s saying to 94% of Americans, ‘I don’t give a damn about you.'”

Cruz continued, “And he’s also saying, it’s actually an insult to Black women. If he came and said, ‘I’m going to put the best jurist on the court,’ and he looked at a number of people and he ended up nominating a Black woman, he could credibly say, ‘Okay, I’m nominating the person who’s most qualified.'”

The senator suggested it is an example of how everything with Democrats is “race,” adding, “They will discriminate based on race.”

Other Republicans have weighed in on Biden’s promise, including Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine), as IJR reported.

During an interview with ABC News’s George Stephanopoulos, Collins said she would “welcome” the appointment of a Black woman, adding that she believes “diversity benefits the Supreme Court.”

Still, Collins told Stephanopoulos the way Biden “has handled this nomination has been clumsy at best. It adds to the further perception that the court is a political institution like Congress.”

Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) told Fox News it is crucial to send “constitutionalists” to the bench.

She continued, “And to be certain that we do not put people on the Supreme Court or the federal bench who are going to be activist judges and are going to make rulings the way they would like to see things be, rather than making rulings based on the rule of law.”

Biden confirmed he would be nominating a Black woman to the Supreme Court last week while announcing Justice Stephen Breyer’s plans to retire.
