Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.) says Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) is “looking backwards” while the Republican Party is “looking forward.”

During an appearance on Fox News Sunday, host Maria Bartiromo showed Stefanik a clip of Cheney’s remarks following the vote to oust the Wyoming lawmaker from her leadership position.

“I think that it is an indication of where the Republican Party is, and I think that the party is in a place that we’ve got to bring it back from, and we’ve got to get back to a position where we are a party that can fight for conservative principles, that can fight for substance,” Cheney said.

She added, “We cannot be dragged backward by the very dangerous lies of a former president.”

When asked for her reaction, Stefanik told Bartiromo, “She is looking backwards. Republicans are looking forward. We are unified and we are talking about conservative principles.”

Watch her comments below (starting around 1:30):

Stefanik continued, “President Trump is an important voice in the Republican Party. We are working as one team.”

She suggested voters across the nation and, specifically, voters in her district “believe that President Trump’s results, whether it was the economic growth, whether it was the historic accords in the Middle East, whether it was being tough on China or the bipartisan coronavirus relief packages, these were significant results that helped everyday Americans.”

Stefanik was elected as the new No. 3 House Republican on Friday, as IJR reported.

“I’m truly honored and humbled to earn the support of my colleagues to serve as House Republican Conference Chair. House Republicans are united in our focus to fight on behalf of the American people to save our country from the radical Socialist Democrat agenda of President Biden and Nancy Pelosi,” she said in a statement.

During a “Today” show interview, Cheney told Savannah Guthrie she is not leaving the Republican Party.
