The U.S. Senate is affirming its commitment to a peaceful transfer of power.
Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W. Va.) introduced a resolution that was approved by unanimous consent on Thursday — which means no senator objected to it — just one day after President Donald Trump did not commit to a peaceful transfer of power if he loses the upcoming election.
In a speech on the Senate floor, Manchin said, “It’s a shame that we have to come and reaffirm our commitment to our country, to our Constitution and who we are as a people. And how we became the greatest country on earth. And the freedoms that we all take for granted.”
“Sometimes we hear things that challenge that, and we heard that yesterday, and we were very concerned about that,” he added.
Manchin continued to say that his resolution affirms that the “bedrock of democracy” is the peaceful transfer of power and that “there should not be a question.”
“For the president to even address the subject of maybe not knowing if he would accept or not is beyond all of our comprehension that that could ever happen in America,” he said.
Manchin continued to read the resolution, “We reaffirm as the Senate our commitment to the orderly and peaceful transfer of power called for in the Constitution of the United States … there should be no disruptions by the president or any person in power to overturn the will of the people.”

On Wednesday, Trump was asked whether or not he would confirm to making sure that there is a peaceful transfer of power if he loses in November, as IJR reported.
He responded, “We’re going to have to see what happens. You know that I’ve been complaining very strongly about the ballots. And the ballots are a disaster.”
“Get rid of the ballots, and you’ll have a very peaceful … there won’t be a transfer, frankly, there’ll be a continuation,” he added.
But during a press on Thursday, White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany said, “The president will accept the results of a free and fair election.”
