A Secret Service agent opened fire in Washington, D.C., after witnessing several people attempt to break into a vehicle.

The Associated Press reported agents assigned to the detail of President Joe Biden’s granddaughter, Naomi Biden, witnessed between two and three people breaking the window of a parked and unoccupied Secret Service vehicle in the Georgetown neighborhood on Sunday night.

In a statement, Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said one agent fired his weapon but it was believed no one was struck.

Guglielmi added the suspects fled the scene in a red vehicle.

The incident comes as the nation’s capital has seen an uptick in carjackings.

As the AP noted, “Police have reported more than 750 carjackings this year and more than 6,000 reports of stolen vehicles in the district.”

Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-Texas) was carjacked in Washington, D.C., in October by “three armed assailants.” His staff reported the congressman was not harmed during the incident.

Meanwhile, Rep. Angie Craig (D-Minn.) was assaulted in her apartment building in the nation’s capital in February.
