Schiff Makes Announcement About Running for Senate

WASHINGTON, DC - JANUARY 25: U.S. Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) speaks at a press conference on committee assignments for the 118th U.S. Congress, at the U.S. Capitol Building on January 25, 2023 in Washington, DC. U.S. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) recently rejected the reappointments of Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) and Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) to the House Intelligence Committee and has threatened to stop Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) from serving on the House Foreign Affairs Committee. (Kevin Dietsch/Getty Images)

Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) announced he is running for Senate.

Schiff made the announcement on Thursday on his Twitter account, saying, “Our democracy is at great risk. Because GOP leaders care more about power than anything else. And because our economy isn’t working for millions of hard working Americans.”

He added, “We’re in the fight of our lives — a fight I’m ready to lead as California’s next U.S. Senator.”

Schiff also shared a video message.

Opening the message, Schiff said, “I’ve always believed that what’s right matters, that the truth matters and that decency matters.”

The video included a clip of Schiff criticizing former President Donald Trump.

The Democrat explained he wish he could “say the threat of MAGA extremists is over.”

He went on to accuse the Republican Party of “gutting the middle class and threatening our democracy.”

Concluding the message, Schiff called on his followers to donate to his campaign.

The announcement was met with some negativity.

TV personality Mark Kaye replied, “People in California could just be dumb enough to vote for you.”

Earlier this month, Rep. Katie Porter (D-Calif.) announced she is running for Senate amid speculation surrounding Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s (D-Calif.) future, as IJR reported.

“California needs a warrior in the Senate—to stand up to special interests, fight the dangerous imbalance in our economy, and hold so-called leaders like Mitch McConnell accountable for rigging our democracy,” she tweeted.

Porter added, “Today, I’m proud to announce my candidacy for the U.S. Senate in 2024.”

Axios noted 89-year-old Feinstein has yet to announce her retirement but is expected to do just that.
