Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) is criticizing a measure to punish Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) and Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.) over their participation in the House committee investigating the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol.

In a tweet on Friday, Romney wrote, “Shame falls on a party that would censure persons of conscience, who seek truth in the face of vitriol.”

“Honor attaches to Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger for seeking truth even when doing so comes at great personal cost,” he added.

Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La.) also weighed on the measure, tweeting, “The RNC is censuring Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger because they are trying to find out what happened on January 6th – HUH?”

Their tweets come after Republican National Committee (RNC) members advanced a resolution to censure Kinzinger and Cheney.

The RNC is expected to approve the resolution on Friday.

RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel, Romney’s niece, reportedly spoke in favor of the censure resolution.

Kinzinger said in a statement that Republicans who advanced the censure resolution “have chosen to censure two lifelong Members of their party for simply upholding their oaths of office. They’ve allowed conspiracies and toxic tribalism hinder their ability to see clear-eyed.”

“My efforts will continue to be focused on standing up for the truth and working to fight the political matrix that’s led us to this point,” he added.

Cheney said in a statement that Republicans “have made themselves willing hostages to a man who admits he tried to overturn a presidential election and suggests he would pardon Jan. 6 defendants, some of whom have been charged with seditious conspiracy.”

She added, “I’m a constitutional conservative, and I do not recognize those in my party who have abandoned the Constitution to embrace Donald Trump. History will be their judge. I will never stop fighting for our constitutional republic. No matter what.”
