The Republican National Committee (RNC) sent a proposed list of coronavirus safety protocols to North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper (D) ahead of the upcoming 2020 Republican National Convention.

In the letter sent on Friday morning, RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel and 2020 Convention President Marcia Kelly confirmed the committee’s goal to move forward with the convention in North Carolina in August.

“President Trump and the Republican National Committee want to hold a safe and successful 2020 Republican National Convention in the impressive city of Charlotte and the great state of North Carolina,” they wrote. “We are asking for a partner in leadership to make this happen.”

The RNC is also requesting “clear guidelines” from Cooper’s administration in order to move forward with preparation for the event.

“To accomplish the goals we all share, which includes helping North Carolina and the region to regain its economic footing, clear guidelines from your administration are needed,” they continued. “We believe that moving forward requires direction and setting expectations to plan for a major event.”

The RNC noted multiple requirements they are willing to enforce for convention attendees. Health screenings, thermal scans, and “aggressive” sanitizing protocols are among the list of requirements the RNC is proposing.

Stressing that “time is of the essence,” McDaniel and Kelly are requesting a detailed response from Cooper’s administration by June 3. The upcoming conference is scheduled to take place August 24-27.

The RNC’s letter to Cooper comes days after President Donald Trump expressed concern about the uncertainties surrounding the conference. The president tweeted about his concerns threatening to relocate the conference if Cooper does not allow the use of the arena at full capacity.

He tweeted:

“Democrat Governor, [Roy Cooper] is still in Shutdown mood [and] unable to guarantee that by August we will be allowed in full attendance. In other words, we would be spending millions of dollars building the Arena to a very high standard without even knowing if the Democrat Governor would allow the Republican Party to fully occupy the space.”

Due to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines on social distancing amid the coronavirus pandemic, it is recommended to cancel or postpone gatherings of more than 250 people in an effort to decrease the possibility of coronavirus transmission.
