Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) slammed a New York City high school for making students learn remotely as the building was being used as a shelter.

Students at James Madison High School in Brooklyn were moved to remote learning in response to inclement weather in the city to provide shelter to migrants.

A memo sent out to parents said the school was being turned into a “temporary overnight respite shelter due to dangerous wind conditions at Floyd Bennett Field.” The school would be filled with “cots and supplies” in order to “provide emergency short-term respite.”

“Talk about putting Americans last,” DeSantis said.

“You’re putting these kids out of an education because you can’t control the border,” DeSantis added.

In a study from January 2022, Harvard University professor Stephanie Jones and Harvard University research associate Emily Hanno found that parents reported seeing an increase in “temper tantrums” and “anxiety” in children, primarily children in elementary school, during remote learning. Children were also found to have managed their emotions poorly.

Another study conducted by University of Pennsylvania psychologist Angela Duckworth in 2021 found that high school students who had participated in Zoom lessons had struggled more than students who had learned in person.
