A poll found a majority of Americans believe arming teachers would make schools safer.

The results of the poll conducted by the Trafalgar Group, in conjunction with Convention of States Action, were provided exclusively to The Daily Wire.

According to the poll, 57.5% of respondents believe preventing teachers who are properly trained from carrying firearms makes schools somewhat or much more dangerous.

Only 30.8% believe the opposite is true.

Sixty-seven and a half percent of Republicans support armed teachers compared to 48.2% of Democrats who say the same.

Young adults between the ages of 18 to 24 voiced the most support for armed teachers, with close to 62% saying preventing teachers from carrying firearms made schools much more dangerous.

The poll surveyed 1,091 likely general election voters from May 25 to 29.

“No shooting at a school is going to be stopped by gun control laws. They are going to be stopped by a variety of fairly simple on-site measures, including arming law-abiding citizens — in this case, specifically teachers — and empowering them to protect our children, schools, and communities,” COSA President Mark Meckler told the Daily Wire.

He added, “A majority of voters see this clearly, despite the relentless propaganda by people who want to confiscate the guns of law-abiding citizens.”

Meckler argued, “Self-defense is a bedrock of this Republic and our Constitution. The Founders were clear that defending those we love is the responsibility of the citizen first.”

He continued, “So many deaths have been prevented by armed citizens, so why would we question the voluntary training and arming of teachers to protect those we love and care for the most?”

The poll comes just a week after a gunman killed 19 students and two teachers at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas.

Texas state Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton told Fox News in the aftermath of the tragedy that school staff that is armed and trained could respond to violence on campus “because the reality is we don’t have the resources to have law enforcement at every school.”

Education Secretary Miguel Cardona suggested the solution of “arming teachers, in my opinion, is further disrespect to a profession that’s already beleaguered and not feeling the support of so many folks.”

He added, “We need to make sure we’re empowering our teachers to be successful at teaching our children.”
