Poll Finds Just 28 Percent of Americans Approve of How Biden Is Handling Inflation

WASHINGTON, DC - DECEMBER 10: U.S. President Joe Biden answers reporters' questions after delivering closing remarks for the White House's virtual Summit For Democracy in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building on December 10, 2021 in Washington, DC. According to the State Department, the summit brought together 100 leaders from government, civil society, and the private sector to "set forth an affirmative agenda for democratic renewal and to tackle the greatest threats faced by democracies today through collective action." President Joe Biden is receiving low marks for his handling of inflation, according to a poll.

An ABC News/Ipsos poll shows that only 28% of Americans approve of how Biden is handling inflation, while 69% disapprove.

Inflation was not the only issue where Biden received a low approval rating. When it comes to his handling of the economic recovery, only 41% approve compared to 57% who disapprove.

A whopping 66% of Americans disapprove of how the president is handling gun violence. Only 32% approve. Forty percent approve of his job on taxes, while 57% disapprove.

The poll was conducted from December 10 to 11 and surveyed more than 500 American adults.

According to CNBC, inflation surged at its fastest rate in November since 1982.

The president told CNN Friday he believes it is “the peak of the crisis.”

Biden explained, “It’s a real bump in the road. It does affect families when you walk into a grocery store, and you’re paying more for whatever you’re purchasing — it matters. It matters to people when you’re paying more for gas, although in some states, we’ve got the price down below three bucks a gallon, but the point is it’s not gone down quickly enough. But I think it will.”

While speaking to reporters, Biden also addressed claims that his policies are causing the spike in inflation.

“The reason for inflation is that we have a supply chain problem that is really severe, and is causing a significant increase in prices in things that in fact are hard to get access to,” Biden said.

During a press briefing Friday, a reporter asked White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki what Biden’s basis is for his claim about inflation.

“We, of course, defer to the Federal Reserve and their assessments that they make, as they make predictions about inflation,” she explained.

Psaki added, “They are predicting, as outside economists are, that inflation will come down next year.  So, we would really defer to them, as would the President.”
