People Gather Outside Sen. Graham’s Home To Protest Against Vote To Fill Ginsburg’s Spot

Sen. Lindsey Graham's (R-S.C.) home in Washington, D.C., was surrounded by protestors after the senator expressed support to fill the vacancy after Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg died on Friday.

Early Monday, demonstrators gathered outside of Graham's home to protest against the senator's push for a vote to fill Ginsburg's spot on the highest court.

Ginsburg died due to complications from metastatic pancreatic cancer on Friday at the age of 87, as IJR previously reported .

The dozens of protestors made loud sounds outside of Graham's home during the "wake up Lindsey Graham" protest, as ABC 7 News put it , showing their opposition to his position. There were several signs during the protest, including ones that read "Two faced coward" and "I can't sleep so neither should Lindsey."

The gathering comes after Graham expressed his support for President Donald Trump to nominate someone to fill the vacancy.

Another sign held by those who gathered outside of Graham's home early Monday read, "Keep your word Lindsey Graham or you are [a] hypocrite."

Graham was called out by some leaders for his previous remarks in 2016.

He said in March 2016:

"I want you to use my words against me. If there’s a Republican president in 2016 and a vacancy occurs in the last year of the first term, you can say Lindsey Graham said let’s let the next president, whoever it might be, make that nomination."

California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) hit back, tweeting, "USE HIS WORDS AGAINST HIM."

Graham said during a recent interview on "Full Court Press with Greta Van Susteren," "Merrick Garland was a different situation. You had the president of one party nominating, and you had the Senate in the hands of the other party. A situation where you've got them both would be different. I don't want to speculate, but I think appointing judges is a high priority for me in 2020."

He added, "If you look into the history of the country, there had not been an occasion where somebody was confirmed in a presidential election year after primary started when you had divided government."

Additionally, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) also tweeted pointing to Graham's remarks in 2018 when he said, "If an opening comes in the last year of President Trump's term, and the primary process has started, we'll wait to the next election."

"Let's see if he has an ounce of integrity left and will keep his word," Sanders responded.

Prior to his tweets on filling the vacancy, Graham expressed "great sadness" in hearing the news of Ginsburg's death.

"Justice Ginsburg was a trailblazer who possessed tremendous passion for her causes. She served with honor and distinction as a member of the Supreme Court," he tweeted on Friday evening.

He added , "While I had many differences with her on legal philosophy, I appreciate her service to our nation."

Trump announced on Monday during a "Fox & Friends" interview that he plans to make known his nominee to replace Ginsburg on the Supreme Court either Friday or Saturday.
