House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) is taking a swipe at Republicans as lawmakers continue to struggle to reach an agreement on the next coronavirus relief package.

The host of CNBC’s “Squawk on the Street” Jim Cramer asked Pelosi if she would be willing to find common ground with Republicans to provide additional resources to minorities and the disenfranchised.

Pelosi claimed Republicans are not willing to meet Democrats in the middle.

“Perhaps you mistook them for somebody who gives a damn for what you just described?” Pelosi said.

She added, “Yeah, that’s the problem. See the thing is, they don’t believe in governance. They don’t believe in governance and that requires some acts of government to do that.”

According to Pelosi, Cramer’s suggestion to provide more assistance to minorities and the disenfranchised is already a part of a proposal put forth by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.).

Pelosi noted economists suggest spending money on those who need it the most because it will be a “stabilization,” and consumer confidence is a “good thing” for the economy.

She indicated Democrats are taking steps to help big employers by lowering the threshold for how they are able to qualify for a second loan.

Lawmakers have struggled and are still struggling to reach an agreement after the $600 per week in enhanced unemployment payments expired on Friday.

Both Pelosi and Schumer have pushed to provide additional assistance for the unemployed, the poor, hospitals, schools, and state and local governments, as IJR previously reported.

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin is adamant the Trump administration is not willing to accept “anything close” to the $3.4 trillion proposal put forth by Democrats.

President Donald Trump said during his press briefing on Wednesday he is considering taking executive action if a deal is not reached in the near future, as IJR previously reported.
