House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) is sharing her thoughts on whether the House of Representatives is seeking other punishments for former President Donald Trump in the wake of the Jan. 6 insurrection.
“He’s gone. What we need is the truth and that’s what we want to find out, the truth about what is happening in our country to enable something like this to be acceptable to the Republican party,” Pelosi said during her press briefing on Thursday.
In keeping with the theme of finding out the truth, Pelosi turned her attention to her proposal for a 9/11-style commission to investigate the events leading up to the insurrection.
She expressed her disappointment with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) after he seemingly shifted his position on the subject.
“I had the impression that he wanted to have a January 6, similar to 9/11, commission but what he said on the floor was really a departure from that… it was really disappointing,” Pelosi said.

Pelosi mentioned one of McConnell’s comments, he said, “We could do something narrow that looks at the Capitol, or we could potentially do something broader to analyze the full scope of the political violence problem in this country.”
She fired back, “No, we have a domestic terrorism challenge in this country. That’s what the director of the FBI testified to at the end of September.”
McConnell, during his remarks, also said Congress could not cherry-pick which acts of violence should be investigated.
“If Congress is going to attempt some broader analysis of toxic political violence across this country, then, in that case, we cannot have artificial cherry-picking of which terrible behavior does and does not deserve scrutiny,” McConnell said.
Pelosi suggested the commission be made up of seven Democrats and four Republicans.
