Congressional Democrats are calling for the impeachment of President Donald Trump after what appeared to be hundreds of his supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol and forced both chambers of Congress to hault proceedings to certify the results of the presidential election.

Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) says she will introduce articles of impeachment against Trump. In a tweet, she wrote, “I am drawing up Articles of Impeachment. Donald J. Trump should be impeached by the House of Representatives & removed from office by the United States Senate. “

“We can’t allow him to remain in office, it’s a matter of preserving our Republic and we need to fulfill our oath,” she added.

As lawmakers gathered to count the Electoral College votes, pro-Trump protesters stormed the U.S. Capitol, as IJR reported.

Lawmakers blamed Trump for the incident as they accused him of inciting his supporters. Sen. Ben Sasse (R-Neb.) said in a statement, “Today, the United States Capitol — the world’s greatest symbol of self-government — was ransacked while the leader of the free world cowered behind his keyboard — tweeting against his Vice President for fulfilling the duties of his oath to the Constitution.”

“Lies have consequences. This violence was the inevitable and ugly outcome of the President’s addiction to constantly stoking division,” he added.

While Democrats called for impeaching the president, the head of the largest manufacturing trade group in the country called for Vice President Mike Pence and members of the Cabinet to invoke the 25th Amendment to remove Trump from office.

The 25th Amendment allows for the Cabinet to remove a president that is deemed to be unfit for office.

Trump was impeached by the House in 2019 for obstruction of Congress and abuse of power. However, he was acquitted on both charges by the Senate in 2020.
