Former President Barack Obama is insisting President Donald Trump is upset over how the media has turned its attention from him and onto the COVID-19 crisis.

“What’s his closing argument? That people are too focused on COVID. He said this at one of his rallies, ‘COVID, COVID, COVID,’ he’s complaining. He’s jealous of COVID’s media coverage,” Obama said.

He argued, “If he had been focused on COVID from the beginning, cases wouldn’t be reaching new record highs across the country this week.”

During a rally in Florida Friday, Trump mentioned Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden and suggested he chooses to dwell on the pandemic, as IJR previously reported.

“All he talks about is COVID, COVID, COVID because they want to scare people and we’ve done so well with it. Now it’s 99.8%. I mean you look at what’s going on and we’re rounding the turn, we’re rounding the corner. We’re rounding the corner beautifully,” he said.

Obama shared a tweet issued by Biden a year ago on Sunday suggesting Trump was not prepared to handle a pandemic, as IJR previously reported.

“We are not prepared for a pandemic. Trump has rolled back progress President Obama and I made to strengthen global health security. We need leadership that builds public trust, focuses on real threats, and mobilizes the world to stop outbreaks before they reach our shores,” Biden tweeted.

Obama followed up, “Eight months into the pandemic, as new cases are breaking records, we need an administration that’s not going to wave the white flag. A year ago today, [Joe Biden] was talking about the leadership we need to get prepared for a pandemic, and he’s got a plan to get it under control.”

While delivering remarks in Delaware on Friday, Biden claimed Trump went “on offense” for the coronavirus.

The United States on Friday set a record one-day increase for coronavirus cases during a new surge across the nation.
