The New York City illegal immigration situation led a wave of migrants to seek shelter at the Roosevelt Hotel Saturday night, but the facility reached capacity, causing “chaos,” a need for heightened security and left masses of people to sleep outside.

Viral News NY posted a video of a large crowd gathering at the hotel turned shelter, noting, “Chaos erupts at the hotel when migrants try to rush the door of the hotel.”

According to CBS News, the hotel shelter reached capacity Saturday, and buses arrived with more illegal immigrants who were allowed to sleep in the vehicle.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams (D) tweeted about the situation and asked for “additional support.”

New York City continues to see hundreds of asylum seekers arrive every day, on top of the more than 93,000 that have arrived since last spring. We continue to do more than any other city in the nation, but we need additional support from our federal and state partners.

Adams recently received criticism for stating that there is “no more room” for illegal immigrants in NYC after declaring the area a sanctuary city, per the IJR.

The New York Post gave an update Monday morning which displayed migrants laying on cardboard spanning the sidewalks outside the hotel shelter.

This was three blocks long, and the groups were being monitored by law enforcement.

According to Eyewitness News ABC7NY, “The Mayor’s office is working to find people a place to stay.

During the report, the station interviewed a New Yorker who said the streets are so full, “You cannot move.”

“It’s a little crazy,” she added.

Fabian Levy, spokesman for the mayor, issued a statement on the situation. He said:

“While we at least offered all adults a temporary place to wait off the sidewalk last night, some have chosen to sleep outside and, in all honesty, New Yorkers may continue to see that more and more as hundreds of asylum seekers continue to arrive each day.”
