The Rev. Al Sharpton was heckled by protesters during his speech at the Haitian migrant encampment in Del Rio, Texas.

A press release from the civil rights organization National Action Network (NAN) said Sharpton toured the migrant camp to “meet and pray with refugees in the wake of the humanitarian crisis,” as Fox News reports.

While delivering his speech, protesters began shouting. One yelled, “Why are you stoking racism where it doesn’t exist?”

Another shouted, “How much money are you making out of this?”

One protester argued, “Del Rio is not a racist city. Del Rio is a loving, caring community. We don’t want your racism in Texas. Get out of here! Nobody wants to hear your racist nonsense in Del Rio!”

Someone proceeded to call Sharpton a “disgrace.”

Sharpton responded to the hecklers on Twitter, saying, “Headed back from the Haitian encampment in Del Rio. It was heartbreaking. We must have a fair asylum policy 4 everyone. Some expected hecklers supporting the brutal Border Patrol guys showed up, I didn’t react. Their behavior underscores my point. This is about race and politics.”

During an appearance on “Morning Joe” on Friday, Sharpton detailed his experience at the southern border.

“To see children in their mother’s arms, being held, with their eyes looking for some hope,” Sharpton explained.

He explained some of the migrants fled Haiti because of what has happened there “in terms of the president being assassinated, with other terrorism going on there, and then hit with the earthquake, some of them didn’t have a home to go to. And they are legitimately looking for asylum.

Sharpton weighed in on the footage of Customs and Border Patrol agents chasing down Haitian migrants on horseback.

“Whether or not the whips were used on the Haitians or the horses, the weaponizing of horses one of the officials at Homeland Security told me was a major concern,” Sharpton said.

He considered it a “badge of honor that people will stand up for people that are looking for something that America claims to represent.”

In response to the footage, the White House announced horses will no longer be used by border officials.
