House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) raised eyebrows when she said that the Republican Party is “trying to get away with” the murder of George Floyd. And now, the California Democrat doubled down, saying that she “absolutely, positively [will] not” apologize for the remark.

Asked on NBC if she will apologize for the remark after Senate Republicans demanded an apology, Pelosi said, “Absolutely, positively not.”

She continued, “I think you, frankly in the press have given them far too much credit for a bill that does nothing.”

Pelosi added, “They’re saying, ‘Well you have your bill, they have theirs’ — yeah, our bill does something, their’s does nothing.”

Asked if Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.), is “working in good faith,” Pelosi responded, “I’m talking about Mitch McConnell.”

Pelosi made the remark during a CBS interview on Tuesday during a conversation about the police reform bills being offered by Republicans and Democrats.

The speaker said, “For something to happen, they’re going to have to face the realities of police brutality, the realities of the need for justice in policing, and the recognition that there’s many, many good people in law enforcement, but not all. And that we have to address those concerns.”

She added, “So, when they admit that, and have some suggestions that are worthy of consideration — but so far they were trying to get away with murder, actually, the murder of George Floyd.”

Pelosi has made a number of moves over the past few weeks in the wake of the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis. The House offered a sweeping police reform bill and she called for the removal of the portraits of former Confederate speakers of the House from the speaker’s gallery on Capitol Hill.
