As Mothers Flee Ukraine With Their Children, Polish Mothers Step Up to Help at the Border

Poland alone has received nearly half of all those fleeing Ukraine, with figures dated March 8, 2022 showing that 1,2 million had crossed into the country in the past 13 days. Many refugees are currently fleeing Ukraine amidst the invasion from Russia, including mothers with their children.

In a photo that has gone viral, strollers are shown waiting for Ukrainian mothers at the border coming into Medyka, Poland.

According to the photographer who took the photo, Francesco Malavolta, the strollers were put there by Polish mothers.

Malavolta told ABC News, “The thing that struck me before taking the photo was the absence of people around while two meters away there were miles of people. It seemed surreal.”

Malavolta continued to share about the effect it had on him.

“I thought of them both, about the solidarity of those who brought the strollers and the dramatic stories of mothers fleeing the war,” he said.

Malavolta also posted the photo to Twitter showcasing the strollers that were lined up:

Moms who were traveling for days from Ukraine with their babies were also given donated items like diapers, baby food, and other various supplies when they arrived.

A law established by the Ukrainian government is forcing many men to stay behind and fight the war, causing separation from their families. The images of mothers and their children escaping the country have “captured the world’s attention,” as ABC News puts it.

“Over 1.5 million refugees have fled Ukraine since Russia invaded, the vast majority being women and children,” the International Rescue Committee wrote.

According to UNICEF, they have “been working nonstop in eastern Ukraine, delivering lifesaving programs for affected children and families as fighting has taken an increasingly heavy toll on the civilian population of 3.4 million people — including 510,000 children.”

As the war continues it reminds us Jesus Christ tells us in John 16:33, “I have said these things to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”
