Former Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin is not saying whether he believes former President Donald Trump’s unfounded claim that the election was stolen through widespread fraud is a lie.
During Wednesday’s interview on CNBC, Mnuchin was asked by Eamon Javers, “You worked as Treasury secretary for Donald Trump for four years. You know him very well. When the former president says that the election in November was stolen, do you believe that was a lie?”
“Well, let me just say, I was very, very involved in the campaign in 2016,” Mnuchin began. “I traveled with the president across the country and was intricately involved in everything.”
He continued, “In 2020, I wasn’t able to participate in the campaign. I obviously was focused on a massive amount of work in Covid. So, I’m really just watching this from the outside.”
Javers pushed back noting that Mnuchin “had some access to the Trump administration” and asked, “Is it a lie for the former president to say the election was stolen?”
“What I’m saying is, I’m focused on our investments, our business going forward. I think the president’s policies were extraordinary in Covid, whether it was the vaccines or other issues. All the work we did under Covid, the bipartisan support we had to get the economy recovered,” Mnuchin said.
Javers responded, “I think that gives us a sense of your position there.”

Despite Trump’s claims of widespread fraud, more than 60 lawsuits failed to alter the results of the election. And several recounts also failed to change the results of the election.
