Minneapolis Councilman Jeremiah Ellison (D), the son of Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison (D), is calling for the dismantling of the city’s police department.

“We are going to dismantle the Minneapolis Police Department,” Jeremiah Ellison said in a tweet on Thursday afternoon.

He continued, “And when we’re done, we’re not simply gonna glue it back together. We are going to dramatically rethink how we approach public safety and emergency response.”

“It’s really past due,” he added.

And when we’re done, we’re not simply gonna glue it back together.

We are going to dramatically rethink how we approach public safety and emergency response.

He also shared a tweet that asked, “Is it me, or. is there literally NO ONE in elected position brave enough to take on the police in their city/state.”

His tweet comes after George Floyd, an unarmed black man, died after a Minneapolis police officer pinned him to the ground by placing his knee on Floyd’s neck.

All four of the officers involved in the incident have been fired and face charges.

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) called for police departments that are “violating people’s civil rights” to be ” stripped of federal funding.”

Jeremiah Ellison received criticism earlier this week after he stated that he supports Antifa.

After President Donald Trump announced that the U.S. would designate Antifa a terrorist organization, Ellison tweeted, “I hereby declare, officially, my support for ANTIFA.”

He added, “Unless someone can prove to me ANTIFA is behind the burning of black and immigrant owned businesses in my ward, I’ll keep focusing on stopping the white power terrorist THE ARE ACTUALLY ATTACKING US!”

Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison said his son’s tweet was “a comment about the absurdity of the president’s comment more than anything else.”

He added, “We don’t see what the president is talking about. I don’t think the president sees what he’s talking about.”
