First Lady Melania Trump is accusing Democrats of trying to “create a divide on something that should be nonpartisan” as she campaigns for her husband, President Donald Trump.

As she spoke to supporters in Atglen, Pennsylvania, on Tuesday, the first lady blasted Congressional Democrats for moving forward with their impeachment push in January instead of focusing on the coronavirus.

“While the president was taking decisive action to keep the American people safe, the Democrats were wasting American taxpayer dollars in a sham impeachment,” she said. “They cared more about removing our elected president.”

At the same time, Melania Trump said she observed the president “work hard to keep people informed and calm” about the virus.

She continued, “This sham was led by [the] opposition, and their display of hatred is on display to this day. Children watching and learning about politics in our country deserve a better display of political responsibility. And respect for our sacred institutions.”

Finally, she said, “As long as Donald Trump is president, our American family values and the virtues that our country was built upon will continue to be cherished and upheld.”

Trump and his allies have repeatedly blasted Congressional Democrats for moving forward with the impeachment trial in the Senate as COVID-19 emerged on the world stage.

While conservatives argued that the president took decisive action by implementing a travel restriction on China in January, he has received criticism after it was revealed that he told journalist Bob Woodward that he wanted to “downplay” the threat of the virus in early-February.

However, Trump has argued that he “up-played” his response to the pandemic.

The U.S. is now recording record numbers of new coronavirus cases with more than 9 million infections and over 230,000 deaths. And the country is adding an average of 70,000 new cases per day.

Melania Trump was expected to hit the campaign trail last week, but those plans were scuttled due to a lingering cough that followed her COVID-19 diagnosis. She has recovered from the virus.
