McEnany Criticizes Republicans Over Their Celebration of Depp

Former White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany suggested Republicans should not be celebrating actor Johnny Depp following the verdict in his defamation case against his ex-wife, Amber Heard.

“These are two people that were in a toxic relationship and are both very flawed. They both have problems, that was evident in both of their testimony. And look, I know that there was a verdict of that was 15 million against Amber Heard, $2 million against one of Johnny Depp’s agents,” McEnany said during Fox News’s “Outnumbered.”

She added, “But let’s be clear. There are no winners here. Not a single person in this case is a winner. We heard about their personal life, intimate details. And I think that those who are celebrating Johnny Depp are a bit misguided, in my view.”

McEnany recalled Depp “as being the actor who said, and I’ll read it directly, ‘When was the last time an actor assassinated a president?’ that’s when President [Donald] Trump was president. I see some Republicans celebrating him, I don’t think that this is your guy.”

She explained, “If you’re looking for someone and I totally absolutely believe in due process and people should be heard, look at Brett Kavanaugh, not Johnny Depp.”

McEnany continued, “That’s just my view, but the jury has decided and we respect the opinion of the jury.”

Her comments come the same day the House Judiciary GOP’s Twitter account posted a GIF of a scene from Depp’s movie “Pirates of the Caribbean.”

During an interview with NBC’s “Today,” Heard’s lawyer said she would appeal.

Elaine Bredehoft told the outlet, “You know, Amber even said on the stand, ‘I am not perfect, I am a human being.’ These people were giving her death threats. They threatened to microwave her baby. This is the kind of social media she was getting.”

She added, “So are any of us perfect? No. Is there something else we feel we should have done? Yes. Absolutely. I always redo my closings 100 times afterwards, whether I win or lose. That’s part of being a good lawyer, a good trial lawyer — there’s always something.”

Bredehoft claimed, “There were a lot of influences here that were beyond our control.”

When asked if Heard would be able to pay the $15 million, Bredehoft responded, “Oh, no, absolutely not.”

Depp brought the case against Heard after she penned an op-ed in 2018 in The Washington Post alleging domestic abuse.
