Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) is not throwing his support behind what he calls a “slanted and unbalanced” proposal for a commission to investigate the events that took place on January 6 at the U.S. Capitol.

“After careful consideration, I’ve made the decision to oppose the House Democrats’ slanted and unbalanced proposal for another commission to study the events of January the 6th,” McConnell said on Wednesday.

Others have opposed the proposal for the commission including House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), as IJR reported.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) tore into Republicans following McCarthy’s comments on the matter.

“I’m very pleased that we have a bipartisan bill to come to the floor,” Pelosi said while speaking to reporters on Tuesday, adding, “And [it’s] disappointing but not surprising that the cowardice on the part of some on the Republican side not to want to find the truth.”

Former President Donald Trump released a statement on Tuesday night blasting the creation of the commission, as IJR reported.

“Republicans in the House and Senate should not approve the Democrat trap of the January 6 Commission. It is just more partisan unfairness and unless the murders, riots, and fire bombings in Portland, Minneapolis, Seattle, Chicago, and New York are also going to be studied, this discussion should be ended immediately,” Trump said.

He continued, “Republicans must get much tougher and much smarter, and stop being used by the Radical Left. Hopefully, Mitch McConnell and Kevin McCarthy are listening!”

The House has the ability to pass the bill with only support from Democrats, but at least 10 Republicans need to support it in the Senate.
