Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) is not saying whether he would welcome former President Donald Trump’s “involvement” in the 2022 midterm elections.

McConnell was asked during an interview on Fox News on Thursday, “Will you welcome the former president’s involvement in the midterms?”

“Well, he has his own agenda,” he responded. “And my view is we’re going to focus on this administration and the future, what they’re trying to do to country and make it a referendum in the fall of ’22 on how people feel about this new government they narrowly elected while they continue a 50-50 Senate.”

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) said in January that Trump plans to help “elect Republicans in the House and Senate in 2022.”

However, McConnell has been a target of Trump’s attacks after he said the former president was “practically and morally responsible” for the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol.

The Kentucky lawmaker has said that he does not “rule out the prospect that [Trump] may well be supporting good candidates.”

“I’m not assuming that, to the extent the former president wants to continue to be involved, he won’t be a constructive part of the process,” he added.

McConnell has brushed off Trump’s attacks and sought to focus on the “future.” Speaking to reporters in April, he said, “What I’m concentrating on is the future and what we are confronted with here is a totally left-wing administration, with a slight majority in the House, a 50-50 Senate trying to transform America into something no one voted for last year.”
