Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) is weighing in on the possibility of a fifth coronavirus stimulus package.

During a brief discussion with reporters, confirmed lawmakers’ intent to developing a stimulus package “based on the conditions that we confront today.”

“We will be taking a look at — in the Senate in a couple of weeks — another package based on the conditions that we confront today,” the Republican lawmaker said to reporters at the Food Bank in Lexington, Kentucky.

When asked if he thought there would be a fifth stimulus bill, he said, “I believe there will be one.”

McConnell went on to offer short details regarding the areas of focus for the upcoming stimulus. Although there are currently no solidified areas of emphasis, McConnell shared what he believes the focus will be.

“If you’re looking for what I think the theme of what a next package that I’m likely to roll out here in a few weeks would focus on: liability reform, kids in school, jobs and healthcare, that’s where the focus it seems to me ought to be,” McConnell said.

The top Republican’s latest remarks follow ongoing discussions about the next stimulus package and what it will include.

Although President Donald Trump has verbalized his support of another round of stimulus checks, it is still unclear whether Republicans will rule in favor of it.

In May, McConnell and other Republican lawmakers supported the idea of taking a “pause” on the fifth stimulus bill in an effort to evaluate the effectiveness of the packages they’d already passed, as IJR reported.

At the time, he said, “I think there’s a high likelihood that we’ll do another rescue package. But we need to be able to measure the impact of what we’ve already done.”
