House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) says Congressional Republicans “want to get to the bottom” of what happened on January 6 when supporters of former President Donald Trump stormed the U.S. Capitol.

During a press conference on Wednesday, the California Republican said, “When it comes to what happened on January 6th, we want to get to the bottom of that.”

“It’s disgusting what transpired that day, we’ve said from the very beginning. The FBI, the hundreds of arrests, I want to make sure nothing that happens here gets in the way of that. We want them to do their work. A majority of the American public believe that as well,” he added.

McCarthy’s comments come as it was reported that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) is expected to appoint a select committee to investigate the riot.

In May, Senate Republicans blocked the creation of an independent commission to investigate the violence, as IJR reported. The bill received scant Republican support in the House, where just 35 Republicans voted for it, and 175 voted against it.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) dismissed the idea that an independent commission would reveal new facts about the day. During a speech on the Senate floor, he previously said, “I do not believe the extraneous ‘commission’ that Democratic leaders want would uncover crucial new facts or promote healing. Frankly, I do not believe it is even designed to.”

“That’s why the Speaker’s first draft began with a laughably rigged and partisan starting point, and why the current language would still lock in significant unfairness under the hood,” he added.
