The daughter of former Olympic gymnast Mary Lou Retton revealed her mother’s health has taken a turn after she was admitted into the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

On Wednesday, Shayla Kelley Schrepfer took to her Instagram page to share her mother had a “pretty scary setback” on Tuesday and remains in ICU. She mentioned how “excited” her loved ones were about seeing her progress before her decline.

“At the beginning of this week, we were going on the up and up. We were so excited, seeing so much progress, and then yesterday we had a pretty scary setback,” Schrepfer said. “She is still in ICU, and we’re just working through some things as far as her setback goes.”

“She had a better day today, which is great, just really really exhausted,” Schrepfer revealed.

She also thanked her followers for their “support.”

“I’m getting so many messages and emails and just, it’s so great to see people love on her, so… that’s it,” she concluded.

This latest news came after Schrepfer posted a statement to Instagram and shared “some uplifting updates” on Oct. 14 about Retton’s condition after news broke about her hospitalization due to a rare form of pneumonia the day before.

“Prayers have been felt and have been answered. Although she remains in the ICU, her path to recovery is steadily unfolding,” she wrote.

Schrepfer mentioned that Retton’s “fighting spirit is truly shining!”

“Her breathing is becoming stronger, and her reliance on machines is diminishing,” she continued.

Although Retton’s “journey” is “lengthy,” according to Schrepfer, she said seeing her “improvements is incredibly heartening!”

“She’s responding so well to treatments,” she added.

On Oct. 11, Schrepfer posted a video on her Instagram page telling her followers that Retton, 55, was “still fighting.”

“It’s going to be a day-by-day process, and we hope that you guys will respect her boundaries as we want to keep the details between her and our family right now,” Schrepfer said. “She’s been treated with the best of the best professionals here, and it has been such a blessing to have their hands on her.”

Since the news of Retton’s hospitalization was made public, the Spotfund page has been flooded with donations and has currently raised more than $450,000, People Magazine reported. Retton does not have health insurance.
