Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem appeared to be the victim of a theft while dining at a downtown Washington, D.C., restaurant on Sunday night. Noem acknowledged the incident to CNN on Monday, noting that it remains unresolved at the White House Easter Egg Roll. The thief stole around $3,000 in cash, Noem’s driver’s license and DHS access badge among other documents and items, the publication reported. The Secret Service — which is responsible for Noem’s security — reviewed surveillance footage from the restaurant and saw an unidentified white male wearing a medical mask steal her bag and leave the restaurant, according to a law enforcement source interviewed by CNN. Noem was reportedly dining at Capitol Burger, a busy spot close to downtown Washington, D.C. Her purse was positioned by her foot beneath her chair, according to two sources familiar with the situation that spoke with CBS. The Secret Service is investigating whether Noem’s financial items have been used, the source reportedly added. Noem had the cash on hand to “treat her family to dinner, activities, and Easter gifts,” the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) wrote in a statement to Newsweek via email. “We can confirm this occurred last night. Her entire family was in town including her children and grandchildren,” the statement from DHS read. DHS and the USSS did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment. Editor’s Note: This story has been updated to detail the restaurant Noem was in at the time.
