Republican Sen. John Kennedy of Louisiana said Democratic Sen. Chuck Schumer of New York’s popularity was akin to a sexually-transmitted disease during a Thursday night appearance on “Hannity.”

Schumer received criticism from left-wing media figures and Democrats in Congress over his decision to help pass a GOP-backed spending bill to prevent a government shutdown, with Democratic Rep. Glenn Ivey of Maryland calling for Schumer’s replacement as leader of Senate Democrats Tuesday. Kennedy said that Schumer was “often wrong,” but got it right when it came to keeping the government open.

“I don’t hate anybody, and that includes Senator Schumer. He’s very smart. On the other hand, Chuck’s often wrong,” Kennedy told Fox News host Sean Hannity. “He never makes the same mistake twice, he makes it five or six times just to be sure. But this time he got it right in supporting our efforts to keep government open.”

“Unless a football coach taught you history, you understand that shutting government down never achieves anything. It just scares people, especially the elderly,” Kennedy continued. “Having said that, many Democrats are angry at Schumer. Among them right now, we’ve all seen the news, he’s about as popular as chlamydia.”

“That, to me, says as much about the Democratic Party as it does about Senator Schumer. What it tells me is that the loon wing of the Democratic Party is firmly in control. Now, that’s great for the Republican party, but it’s bad for America,” he added.

While Schumer faces continued backlash from within his own party, polls from NBC and CNN showed that less than a third of respondents had a favorable view of the Democratic Party, while the majority disapproved of the party.

Some Democrats argued in favor of denying Republicans the votes to overcome a filibuster on the continuing resolution, saying it could halt federal worker layoffs stemming from the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), but Schumer argued it would be “a costly distraction” to the fight against President Donald Trump during his March 13 speech on the Senate floor.

Moreover, Democrats who favored abolishing the filibuster during the Biden administration appeared to alter their position when it came to the GOP-backed spending bill.

After voting with Republicans, Schumer cancelled his scheduled book tour, which many have speculated was due to the backlash from his decision to back the spending bill.
