Former President Jimmy Carter is turning 96 years old on Thursday.

Carter, president from 1977 to 1981, plans to celebrate his birthday in Plains, Georgia, at his home with his wife, according to The Associated Press.

He is the longest living U.S. president. Carter survived cancer after being diagnosed in 2015.

Even after suffering from a fall in late 2019, Carter was out the next day in Tennessee helping to build homes for Habitat for Humanity. At the time, he called it his “No. 1 priority” to “come to Nashville and build houses,” despite his fall which required stitches above his eyebrow.

Carter has weighed in on the upcoming 2020 presidential election, as he previously said he approves of “the use of absentee ballots and have been using them for more than five years,” as IJR reported.

In August during the 2020 Democratic National Convention, the former president praised Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden.

“Joe is that kind of leader, and he is the right person for this moment in our nation’s history,” Carter said, later adding, “Joe Biden must be our next president.”
