The Biden administration is changing course and set to deport Venezuelan illegal immigrants who have crossed into the U.S. amid the border crisis.

According to a press release issued by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Thursday, “The United States is announcing today that it will resume direct repatriations of Venezuelan nationals who cross our border unlawfully and do not establish a legal basis to remain.”

It further states, “This announcement follows a decision by authorities from Venezuela to accept the return of Venezuelan nationals, as well as high-level discussions yesterday in Mexico City between the United States, Mexico, Colombia, and Panama where Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro N. Mayorkas, and Homeland Security advisor Liz Sherwood-Randall discussed ongoing coordinated efforts to address irregular migration in the Western Hemisphere.”

The statement claims that the Biden administration has consistently enforced immigration laws, but in February of 2021, the Texas Tribune reported that the Biden administration was imposing new guidelines for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and placing tougher restrictions on the agency.

This led to record numbers of illegal crossings into the U.S. at the southern border, per CBS News. These hit an all-time high in 2022 and 2023 is trending to surpass that.

In addition, Biden called for illegal immigrants to “surge to the border,” while campaigning in 2020, per former Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy’s YouTube channel.

According to the New York Post, although the Biden Administration referred to the masses of people crossing into the U.S. via the southern border as asylum seekers, many of those who answered his call to “surge the border” did not qualify for asylum in 2022.
